Would you like to drive 130 kilometres an hour, legally?
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne is being urged to conduct a pilot project on higher speed limits.
Chris Klimek of the group stop100.ca says the perfect place to do this would be the new highway 407 east extension, a section of which is scheduled to open this year.
Klimek has sent a letter to the Ontario government, saying he has 40,000 supporters for the proposal to raise speed limits to between 120 and 130 kilometres an hour on the 400-series highways.
But it may be a non-starter. Bob Nichols is a spokesperson for the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. He says the speed limits were reviewed as recently as 2012 and a decision was made not to raise them.
He points out that Ontario has one of the strongest road and highway safety records across North America.
But Klimek says the province’s strong record of safety proves his point, that motorists have been largely ignoring the posted speed limit and travelling safely at between 110 and 130 kilometres an hour for decades on the province’s major highways.
Chris Klimek, Brian Patterson of the Ontario Safety League and OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt will all join in the discussion on Fight Back with Libby Znaimer (today with guest host Jane Brown) at 12:05pm on Zoomer Radio.
