EARTH DAY 2024

This Monday is April 22nd – ‘Earth Day’ – every April 22nd, since 1970.  And this past year has been unlike any in at least one way – the hottest year in recorded history. The heat domes and droughts, coupled with atmospheric rivers and devastating floods – a year without the ‘typical’ winter in many parts of Canada – continue to tell us climate change is not only ‘real’, but it’s a real threat to the way we live.

‘Earth Day’ is really about us, and how we will thrive – or merely survive – on earth. For over a half-century scientists and experts have warned us… and so have some of our favourite recording artists. I have 19 amazing songs from across the decades and music genres. including three that I’ve never played before.

Please join me for the classics by Joni Mitchell and Marvin Gaye; old AND new songs by Neil Young and Bruce Cockburn, an Oscar winner by Melissa Etheridge and a darkly humorous novelty song by a mathematician-turned-satirist.

And, as every Sunday, I start the show with ‘The Sunday Sock Hop’ – an hour of the 1950s and early 60s – the songs we listened to on the jukeboxes and transistor radios, the songs we danced to at the high school gyms.  It’s all on the next ‘Vintage Favourites’ this Sunday (April 21) between 2:00 and 4:30.
