Are you an animal lover? At least, do you believe we have a responsibility to prevent cruelty to animals? Well that whole system is in the midst of upheaval and this time it’s not because of the government. After 100 years of enforcing animal welfare law, the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) is handing the reins over to the province – as of June 28, the organization will no longer investigate animal cruelty complaints. The reason is, that role, was deemed unconstitutional by the Superior Court of Justice. The Ford government has said it will appeal the ruling. But where does this leave things? Libby speaks to OSPCA General Counsel Brian Shiller and Barbara Cartwright, CEO of Humane Canada.
