Councillor Josh Matlow is calling for the City of Toronto to slash the Toronto Police budget and reinvest the money in community investments like affordable housing and anti-racism education.
The Toronto-St. Paul’s councillor’s motion backed by Toronto-Centre councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam would see a 10% cut to the police budget for 2021.
Matlow says people of colour with lower incomes tend to be disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system.
He argues his proposed changes would be a big step toward providing equity for black, indigenous and people of colour.
