We are learning the Eglinton Crosstown LRT is at risk of opening at least seven months late and going over budget by more than $330-million.
A Toronto Star report says internal Metrolinx documents show the consortium building the LRT told Metrolinx last month it expected the line won’t be complete until May of 2022, rather than the provincial government’s September 2021 deadline.
The documents also show the provincial transit agency is projecting the LRT’s total cost to be just under $12.6 billion, more than $330-million more than the current approved budget.
Metrolinx Spokesperson Anne Marie Aikens says the agency does not accept the consortium’s position that the Crosstown will open late. She says they are still working towards a September 2021 opening. As for the projected cost overrun, Aikens indicates the approved budget will be met.
The Eglinton Crosstown project has been under construction since 2011 and has been delayed before. In 2015, the governing Ontario Liberals announced the 2020 opening would be pushed back one year.
