Immunizations are getting a boost!
Ontario public health experts are launching a new research centre focussed on improving immunization rates and countering unfounded fears fueled by the anti-vaccine movement.
It will be the first academic centre of its kind in Canada to focus primarily on public perception of vaccines and exploring ways to boost confidence and vaccination rates.
The centre will be led by Natasha Crowcroft, chief science officer at Public Health Ontario.
Crowcroft says vaccine hesitancy is a growing threat and measles outbreaks in places such as New York could easily happen here. But she cautions, “we’ve been lucky and we need to raise our game.”
Nearly 800 people have been infected with measles in the United States so far this year, most of them in New York.
The World Health Organization has declared refusal or wariness of vaccinations one of the top ten global health threats this year.
