ALBERTA GOV'T PROMISES $100M AID FOR FORT MAC EVACUEES

The tens of thousands of residents from Fort McMurray will be getting financial assistance from the Alberta government.

Premier Rachel Notley says every adult will receive $1,250 and $500 for each dependent.
The pledge will cost the Alberta government $100-million.
The Red Cross says Canadians have so far donated $30-million to help evacuees.
Ottawa’s also promised to match all donations to the Red Cross.
Meanwhile, the wildfire’s grown to just over one-thousand-square kilometres.

Officials say it’ll likely continue burning for weeks.
Some residents got a sobering view of the devastation as a convoy was escorted through the city to reach evacuees who’d been trapped in the north to safer spots.
One says the city looks like a war zone with burned out vehicles.
The premier says thanks to the heroic efforts of firefighters, Fort McMurray’s downtown and critical infrastructure remains largely intact.
