More than 1,000 Canadian women who claimed they were not properly warned of breast cancer risks by the manufacturers of popular menopause drugs, known as hormone replacement therapy, can now request compensation from a $13.6 million settlement fund.

The lead claimant, Dianna Stanway, alleged in 2004 that she developed breast cancer after using the menopause drug Premarin in combination with the hormone progestin for about eight years.

69 year old Stanway is now cancer free and says her decade-long class action suit against drug manufacturer Wyeth Canada, “was about accountability, not cash.”  She says it was the point that the menopause medications caused cancer and people should know.

Wyeth Canada, in agreeing to the settlement, made no admission of fault.  The drug manufacturer is the maker of two popular hormone replacement therapy medications, Premarin and Premplus.  The drugs are prescribed by doctors as a way to relieve menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats.
