Toronto’s new mayor says he has barely had time to reflect on his new position.
John Tory says he has been immersed in briefing books since his election. He says he has noticed that everyone recognizes him on the subway, and they all smile. But he concedes that may change.
Tory will preside over a second day of the new Toronto city council as CouncilĀ approves …. or overturns …. Tory’s recommendations for the various committees.
There have been some complaints from the left-wing members of council that they have been excluded from the prominent positions. But Tory says he has chosen the councillors he needs to achieve his agenda. He adds that not all of the so-called “progressive” councillors have been overlooked. He points to Shelley Carroll. Tory is recommending her for the police services board, the TTC, and the budget committee, along with assuming the post of Deputy Speaker.
Tory may also face a challenge over his choice of Speaker. He wants Frances Nunziata to continue the position she held under Rob Ford’s administration. But some councillors don’t want the Ford loyalist to remain in the post. They are pushing for former TTC Chair Maria Augimeri to assume the Speaker’s chair.
Council will resume at 2:00 this afternoon.
