Half a dozen Canadian art museums are going to carefully examine their collections – to see if they contain any nazi-looted works from the Second World War.

The two year pilot project is being spearheaded by the Canadian Art Museum Directors Organization.

The Holocaust-era Provenence Research and Best-Practice Guidelines Project also aims to restore any looted art to its rightful owners – and develop guidelines that other Canadian organizations can utilize – to make the same determinations.

The six participating museums include The Art Gallery of Ontario, The Royal Ontario Museum and Hamilton’s McMaster Museum of Art.
