The world has lost a great comic author.
Sue Townsend has died.
Townsend created the angst-ridden teenage diarist Adrian Mole.
Her publisher, Penguin Books says Townsend died in Leicester, England on Thursday.
She was 68.
Townsend married at 18 and by 23 she was a single mother of three. She worked at various jobs and honed her writing style for years before publication.
Her first novel, “The Secret Life of Adrian Mole Aged 13 3/4” was published in 1982 and was praised as a comic masterpiece – selling more than 20 million copies around the world.
Several of her books were adapted for the stage, screen, radio and television.
In later years Townsend, who had diabetes, used a wheelchair and was blind. She received a kidney transplant from her son in 2009, and suffered a stroke in 2013.
