The number of sick days you take at work seems to be related to whether you work in the private sector or for the government. A new report by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business suggests public sector employees in this country take nearly five more sick, disability and personal days each year than Canadians working in the private sector. The report says these extra days are costing the economy up to 3.5 billion dollars a year, noting some public sector workers can bank unused sick days, then take a lump sum payment or use the days to retire early. Federal employees take the most time off, averaging 15 sick, disability and personal days a year compared to 13 days in the overall public sector and 8 days in the private sector. The CFIB report calls for sick day allotments in the public sector to be aligned with those offered in the private sector and for the accumulation of unused sick days to be discontinued.
