We’ve learned striking federal public servants will continue to receive their regular salaries until at least May 10th.

A Globe and Mail report quotes the federal department in charge of employee salaries as saying when a strike extends beyond five consecutive days, pay processing becomes more complex because of legislative requirements and provisions of collective agreements.

A statement from Public Services and Procurement Canada also says the workers will likely have their pay clawed back at a later date for the days they spent on the picket line.

More than 100,000 federal public sector workers have been on strike now for a week, since April 19th, as mediated contract talks continue.

Some 47,000 employees have been deemed essential and are not obligated to participate in the strike.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is calling on Justin Trudeau to end the walkout.

“The prime minister should be taking this seriously and personally,” Singh told reporters, “These are the workers that work for the prime minister, that work for the government. The prime minister often talks about the importance of workers. So where is he then? If he thinks this is important, if he takes workers seriously, he should be showing up, taking this matter seriously and getting personally involved and finding a solution.”

As of Monday night, Treasury Board President Mona Fortier outlined in an open letter that the outstanding contract issues are wage increases, teleworking, outsourcing contracts, and seniority rules in the event of a layoff.
