Leaders of western democracies are quickly announcing sanctions against Russia, after Russian President Vladimir Putin sent troops into two eastern regions of Ukraine on Monday.
Canada’s prime minister has imposed various sanctions on Russia, including a ban on any financial dealings with the two areas which Putin has declared as separatist and independent.
“This recognition is a violation of Russia’s obligations under international law and the charter of the United Nations,” Trudeau explained in a late Tuesday afternoon news conference, “Canada also denounces Russian military actions including orders to move into Ukraine which is a clear incursion of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
Canadian plans also include deployment of another 460 soldiers, the frigate HMCS Halifax, and a patrol plane to eastern Europe to reinforce the NATO alliance there.
Justin Trudeau accuses Putin of ordering an invasion of eastern Ukraine and attacking democracy.
In Washington, President Joe Biden says the United States is taking strong action against Russia after Russian lawmakers authorized Russia’s leader to use military force outside their country.
And U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says Russia’s actions have put an end to diplomacy for the time being.
In addition, all 27 European Union member nations are ordering initial penalties targeting Russia.
Both the leaders of Japan and Australia have done the same.
