Prime Minister Justin Trudeau quietly indicated the reopening plan Thursday evening during his weekly call with the premiers.
There is a target of mid-August for when the border might reopen to fully vaccinated Americans.
Trudeau also said if Canada’s current positive path of vaccination rate and public-health conditions continues, then Canada could be in a position to welcome fully vaccinated travelers from all countries by early September.
The border has been closed to non-essential travel since the early weeks of the pandemic.
Prior to the call, Ontario’s Doug Ford said the premiers would also be talking with the prime minister about vaccine passports for Canadians.
Ford made it clear his government would not be issuing vaccine passports but he expects the federal government will provide some sort of vaccine passports for international travel.
