PAT BOONE at 90

You might not have thought about Pat Boone lately – he’s been largely out of the public eye. His ‘glory years’ are now part of a distant past. But what a glorious time it was in the late 50s and early 60s, when Pat was second only to Elvis in chart success, and a close rival in overall popularity.  Pat Boone had 16 top-ten hits in just three years; he was also a TV and movie star, and a best-selling author as well.

This weekend Pat Boone turns 90 – and just last year, he had a guest-duet spot on Ann-Margret’s album ‘Born to be Wild’. I’ll feature a ‘baker’s dozen’ (that’s 13) of Pat’s greatest hits, and a track from his notorious self-parody album ‘In a Metal Mood – No More Mr. Nice Guy’, along with that Ann-Margret duet.  You probably haven’t heard Pat Boone in many years – tune in for his music, and his story.

I’m also saluting Toronto’s own Dan Hill who’s about to turn 70.  And I have a very special treat for you: the rarely-heard original arrangement of his biggest hit – ‘Sometimes When We Touch’.  A few years ago, we were fortunate – and privileged – to have Dan Hill perform a live mini-concert at Zoomer Hall, and he played his most famous song in its original form.  He recalled how he took it to New York and asked for help from the legendary Brill Building composer Barry Mann.

With Barry’s help, a new arrangement and a new melody was developed, and Dan Hill’s song became a worldwide smash. I’ll play both versions along with other songs by Dan. Of course, the show’s first hour is always ‘The Sunday Sock Hop‘ featuring the best of the Fifties and early Sixties. This time, I’ll have songs by Fats and Chuck, Little Richard, Bill Haley and Johnny Mathis plus a pair of doo wop classics and the story of a very naughty song: ‘Work With me Annie’.

That’s all on the next Vintage Favourites – this Sunday (June 2nd) from 2:00 to 4:30.
