February is ‘Black History Month’ this year, and every year, in both the US and in Canada. Did you know Toronto was the first Canadian city to proclaim ‘Black History Month’ back in 1979? This year’s theme is ‘resistance’ – a powerful word that packs both perspiration and inspiration, character and confidence, legend and legacy. And music is one of the keys to building and sustaining Black History Month.
And there’s such a wealth of great music that I’m blessed with to curate this important edition. You’ll hear songs by Billie Holiday and Sam Cooke, James Brown and Nina Simone, as well as Dan Hill and K’naan. That’s our main spotlight – but remember our secondary features including ‘The Sunday Sock Hop’ from 2-3pm. and mini-salutes to Stompin’ Tom Connors and Nikki Yanofsky. Now that’s ‘variety’ ! That’s ‘Vintage Favourites’!
