We’re learning the City of Toronto needs an additional $26-billion over the next ten years just to keep much of its infrastructure in its current condition.
A new 255-page staff report detailed in the Toronto Star also says unless the city comes up with that amount then transit, public housing, parks and libraries will fall further into disrepair.
Toronto’s mayor says she’s seen the numbers in the report which is going to her executive committee next week.
Olivia Chow says they are so staggering that the city needs to pause on building anything new and “fix what we have first.”
The report was drafted to meet the provincial requirement that all municipalities complete detailed asset-management plans.
The document covers about $73-billion in Toronto assets that are not considered essential (plans for “core” infrastructure like roads, bridges, and water systems had to be filed by 2022) but still raises concerns about facilities that Torontonians rely on every day for things like transportation, recreation, and social services.
