Ontario’s health minister says she has to wait and see the details of the new pharmacare deal reached between the federal New Democrats and minority Liberals before committing to it.

Sylvia Jones says all she knows about the deal is what she’s read in the news.

Jones went on to say she’s had “no conversations, no feedback, no memos and nothing directly from the federal health minister.”

The provincial health minister says until she gets some information she cannot say whether Ontario would be opting in or out of the pharmacare deal.

Alberta’s health minister has already said her province will be opting out of the national pharmacare program. Instead, Adriana LaGrange says Alberta hopes to receive a per capita share of the funding that can go into its own provincial healthcare system.

Federal Health Minister Mark Holland says he would like to see provinces wait until they get details.

“Some people are jumping the gun and sort of talking about what that is before it’s completed and that’s creating some confusion,” Holland told reporters in Ottawa, “So the first thing I would say is that everybody needs to take a pause. For provinces to say whether they’re going to participate in something or not when they don’t even know what it is, is a little premature.”

What we do know from Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, the plan is for universal, single payer pharmacare which includes a commitment to delivering diabetes medication and contraceptives.
