Education workers across Ontario are expected to be in a legal strike position the week of September 23rd. Just days into the new school year and the Canadian Union of Public Employees says it will request what’s called a no board report that starts a 17-day countdown to possible job action by some 55-thousand workers including education assistants and custodians. CUPE’s previously suggested that could take the form of work-to-rule, rotating strikes or a full walkout. Education Minister Stephen Lecce says he’s disappointed the union’s taken this step but is pleased CUPE and the school boards have agreed on a mediator. Lecce is calling on all sides to reach a deal in good faith as soon as possible.
