This year’s Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the group that is overseeing the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons. The Norwegian Nobel Committee says it’s honouring the Netherlands-based global watchdog, The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, for its extensive efforts to eliminate chemical weapons. The OPCW was among a record 259 candidates nominated for this year’s prize. One of the organization’s associates is Canadian Scott Cairns. He was team leader of the group that confirmed the Syrian government’s chemical weapons’ attack on its citizens in August. He remains in Syria overseeing the destruction of the country’s chemical weapons. Also on the nomination list, was Malala Yousafzai, the 16 year old human rights activist who was shot by the Taliban for promoting education for females in her country.
