Pope Francis has come out and endorsed same-sex civil unions for the first time as pontiff.
His comments came in the documentary ”Francesco,” which premiered at the Rome Film Festival today.
The remarks came midway through the film that looks at issues the pope cares about the most, including the environment, poverty, migration. racial and income inequality and those most affected by discrimination.
”Homosexual people have the right to be in a family. They are children of God,” said Francis.
”What we have to have is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered.”
He’s believed to be the first pope to use the word gay publicly in 2013.
”If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?”
