A dedicated ”Vision Zero” traffic enforcement unit, that’s been out since January in parts of the city where speeding and dangerous driving are most common, is now permanent.

Mayor John Tory says the continued commitment to address road safety remains a top priority.

”There’s been a lot of talk about the pandemic and to some extent it put the focus on that, properly so,” according to the mayor.

”But we’ve got to get back to talking about safety and making sure that that is a number one focus on our city streets for everybody, but especially for drivers.”

The unit, initially made up of two teams of a total of 8 officers, will now be twice as big; two teams of 16 with two sergeants, and focus on locations where data shows the greatest need.

Some of that data includes information from 50 automated speed cameras in operation across the city.

The unit has already issued more than 29,000 tickets so far this year.
