The controversy over Ottawa’s decision to chose it to run a now cancelled student volunteer program is one of the main reasons WE Charity is scaling back operations.
Saying it’s financial position has been greatly affected by the pandemic and ”recent events,” WE is laying off staff in Toronto and the U.K.
At its main headquarters in Toronto, 16 full-time employees are being laid off, while 51 won’t have their contracts renewed at month’s end.
WE Charity’s British operations will be centralized in Canada, meaning 19 full-time staff and contract employees in London will also be laid off.
Plus a number of buildings on a block near Toronto’s Moss Park, acquired by WE as part of a 25th anniversary plan to create a youth campus, will be assessed by the chariity to determine which ones could be sold.
