In an usual move, the Prime Minister’s Office has issued a statement in a bid to end speculation that Bill Morneau is about to be fired as finance minister.
Justin Trudeau says he has full confidence in him and any reports to the contrary are false.
The opposition’s been calling for Morneau to step down over allegations he had a conflict-of-interest in the WE Charity scandal.
News that Mark Carney, the former governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England, is helping advise the Trudeau government on the post-COVID-19 economy recovery has merely fuelled the speculation that Morneau’s about to be replaced.
But in the statement, the PMO praises his record, adding Morneau and other ministers will ”keep doing the work that Canadians rely on to get them through this pandemic”.
