The Trudeau government has agreements with pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and biotech firm Moderna to procure millions of doses of their experimental COVID-19 vaccines.
In making the announcement, Procurement Minister Anita Anand says Canada would get access to the vaccines if they prove to be safe and effective.
Pfizer and Moderna began Phase 3 clinical trials that will help determine how well they work.
This phase will see the vaccine candidates tested on 30,000 with results expected in the fall.
Pfizer and Moderna had both reported positive results from earlier, smaller trials.
Meanwhile, Canada’s Providence Therapeutics says its trials of a potential vaccine on mice completely blocked the coronavirus, but needs money to tests it on humans.
Providence Therapeutics says it has not heard back from Ottawa since submitting a request for $35-million in funding in April.
If human testing proves successful, the company says it could deliver five-million-doses by the middle of next year.
