Passengers on TTC buses, streetcars and subways will now have to wear masks whenever they’re accessing the transit network.

The new measure, announced last month, goes into effect today across the network.

There won’t be any fines handed out for the measure but Toronto mayor John Tory is urging people to be considerate of their fellow transit users.

“We’ve put it in place–the TTC and ourselves at the city hall so that people could stay healthy, so that we can put this pandemic behind us and move forward to have an even better summer,” said Tory. “Yes, we’ve got some patios open but there’s so much more we need to do to get back to a normal life.”

The TTC says they have about a million masks ready to dispense at stations for passengers who don’t have face coverings.

Exceptions will be made for people with health conditions that would be affected by masks. They’re also not required for children under two years old.

Toronto Police traffic services will also resume enforcing parking violations on Toronto streets today. They had been suspended since March when the pandemic started to hit North America in force.
