More than three months after financier Jeffrey Epstein died in prison, two guards have been charged with conspiracy and filing false records.
The night of his death, prosecutors claim guards Tova Noel and Michael Thomas did not enter the area where Epstein was being held and that security camera footage proves he was alone in his cell.
A lawyer for one of the guards say both men are being made scapegoats, that authorities are going after ”the low man on the totem pole.”
New York City’s chief medical examiner ruled Epstein’s August 10 death suicide by hanging, though a former medical examiner hired by Epstein’s lawyers disagrees with that conclusion.
Epstein was awaiting trial on charges accusing him of operating a sex trafficking ring and allegedly paying young teenage girls for sex.
He had pleaded not guilty.
