The mother of one of six Canadian soldiers killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan in 2007 is this year’s National Silver Cross Mother.
Reine Samson Dawe of Kingston will lay a wreath at the National War Memorial Remembrance Day on behalf of all mothers who’ve lost children in service to Canada.

27-year-old Capt. Matthew Dawe was one of the highest-ranking Canadians to die in Afghanistan to that point and was remembered as a dedicated soldier and platoon commander.
He died the same day his son turned two.
Matthew hailed from a family that saw his father and three brothers also serve in the military.
