International security experts and former diplomats share the view that the arrest of Huawei Technologies’ chief financial officer in Vancouver could put Canadian business people at risk of being jailed in retaliation.
The Canadian Justice Department says the U.S. is seeking Meng Wanzhou’s extradition, but is not revealing other details because of a court-ordered publication ban on her pending bail hearing.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the appropriate authorities made decisions without any political involvement or interference.
Chinese officials are calling for Meng’s release and want to know why she was arrested.
The head of global security program at the Centre for International Governance Innovation warns China’s likely to pay tit for tat.
David Mulroney, a former Canadian ambassador to China, says while he doesn’t want to overstate the possibility of retaliation, the Chinese will be looking for ways to strike back, in part as an example for others.
