On the eve of Black Friday and the holiday season approaching, the Trudeau government’s introduced legislation that may end the five-weeks of rotating strikes by postal workers.

Labour Minister Patty Hajdu says while the government’s a strong supporter of organized labour and workers’ rights and still hopes for a negotiated settlement, the disruption’s caused problems for small businesses, those in rural and remote areas and for low-income Canadians relying on cheques.

The president of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, Mike Palecek, calls it ”unconscionable” that a government that professes to champion workers’ rights would do this.

”Obviously we’re outraged.  It’s another violation of our constitutional right,” said Palecek.  

The union’s prepared to fight the legislation in court. 

CUPW points out it fought, and won, against legislation introduced by the Harper government in 2011, and that it’ll do the same with this legislation.  

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association calls the bill ”a serious threat to workers’ constitutional rights.”
