Hamilton born installation and performance artist Kapwani Kiwanga has won the prestigious 2018 Sobey Art Award, one of the most most valuable prizes for artists in Canada.
The 40-year old was was presented with the 100-thousand dollar prize at a gala ceremony at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa last night.
Kiwanga tackles a wide range of subjects in her work; one reoccurring theme is the power imbalance that can occur in human interactions. As a result, she says her work blurs the line between truth and fiction.
Kiwanga is the 15th Canadian artist under 40 to win the award. She currently lives and works in France.
