When Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited Premier Doug Ford at Queen’s Park this afternoon, he had to explain how the asylum-seeking system works.
Just before the meeting, the Ford government said Ottawa’s to blame for a housing crisis caused by those crossing the border illegally and that the federal Liberals should pay 100% of what the province calls the ”mess”.
”I attempted to reassure the premier that the asylum seeker stream is separate from the immigration stream, that Canada has always had a separate procedure to assess refugees and to determine whether or not they are indeed fleeing violence, persecution and terror or else they’re simply economic migrants at which point they would get sent home once their files are processed.”
The premier did not speak after the meeting and instead went behind closed doors with his cabinet.
Ford did however tweet ”Had a productive first official meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this afternoon.  I restated my commitment to stand side-by-side with our federal counterparts in the ongoing NAFTA negotiations.”
