One half of the Italian film-making duo who turned out movies like “Padre Padrone and “Caesar Must Die” has passed away.
Vittorio Taviani  and his brother Paolo became household names in Italy in the 1960’s and were so close, Italian super star Marcello Mastroianni called them individually “Paolovittorio”.
“Padre Padrone” won the Palme D’Or in Cannes in 1977. Their docudrama “Caesar Must Die” won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2012.
The Repubblica newspaper says the two masters of Italian cinema narrated the history, reality and contradictions of Italy.
Vittorio Taviani died after a long illness at the age of 88
