EDWIN HAWKINS DIES AT 74

Grammy winner Edwin Hawkins, the gospel star best known for the crossover hit ”Oh Happy Day,” has died of pancreatic cancer.

“Oh Happy Day” began as a local radio favourite in the San Francisco area before becoming an international hit in 1969.

In addition to being a musician, Hawkins was a pianist, choir master, composer and arranger, and is credited as being one of the originators of the urban contemporary gospel sound.
Edwin Hawkins was 74.
