Toronto has reached a new low.
(CBC News)
The city saw a morning low of -22 C this morning, beating the 57-year-old record of minus -18.9 C.
An extreme cold weather alert was in effect for the GTA and much of Ontario, though it’s since been cancelled for all of the GTA except northern York and Durham regions.
Day time temperatures are expected between -10 C tomorrow and -15 C New Years Day but it’ll start feeling like -30 C again by late Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.
Environment Canada senior climatologist Dave Phillips says the bitter cold may mean less snow this winter.
”That snow engine gets turned on when you’ve got cold air coming across an open lake but now the lakes are freezing over so we may not see as much snow as people thought because of the fact that the lakes are not contributing to the lake effect.”
