For the second straight year the late frontman of the Tragically Hip has been selected Canada’s Newsmaker of the Year.
Gord Downie received 53% of votes in the Canadian Press survey of news editors and broadcasters.
He’s among a small number of prime ministers and athletes who’ve been selected more than once.
Others include former prime ministers Lester Pearson and Pierre Trudeau and athletes Terry Fox and Rick Hansen.
He’s also the only entertainer to ever be chosen top newsmaker in the survey’s 71 years.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was second in this year’s poll with 13% of the votes.
Downie, who died of brain cancer in October, used every opportunity in his final months to speak out in support of Indigenous people.
A public memorial is being considered by the Hip though no official date has been set.
