Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the federal government is drawing the line at marijuana when it comes to legalizing illicit drugs.
Trudeau made the comments yesterday on a visit to British Columbia. The Prime Minister says legalizing marijuana will keep young people safe and take money away from criminal gangs. But Trudeau also made the point that marijuana is not legal just yet.
“Until we have a framework to control and regulate marijuana, the current law applies,” Trudeau emphasized.
The Prime Minister says the government plans to introduce legislation by the summer to legalize pot, but there are no plans to do so for any other substances.
Trudeau is scheduled to take part in a round table discussion in Vancouver today on B.C.’s opioid crisis, after giving the province $10-million in funding to help deal with it.
Here in Toronto, Mayor John Tory has taken action to make sure Toronto’s opioid problem does not become a crisis.
While the full scope of fentanyl related problems in Toronto isn’t known, Doctor Barbara Yaffe, Toronto’s acting medical officer of health, says there are already troubling figures indicating an uptick.
