There was an unusually high number of pedestrian related collisions yesterday in Toronto, including a collision at Bathurst and Sheppard that left an elderly woman dead.
In all, Toronto Police say 22 pedestrians and cyclists were struck by vehicles. At least 16 of them came within two hours starting at around 6 pm, and most were minor in nature.
“We have seen an increase in the number of collisions involving pedestrians and cyclists this evening, and we have a constellation of circumstances; this time of year it gets dark a lot earlier, we obviously have less than optimal weather tonight, it’s cold and rainy, which is making it slippery,” Constable Craig Brister said last night.
In one incident, two people were struck by a vehicle at Queen and Dalhousie Streets. According to paramedics, one patient was seriously injured and transported to hospital with a fractured leg. The second patient had minor injuries.
The last time Toronto police saw a similar surge in pedestrian accidents was between November 2nd and 3rd when 14 pedestrians were hit between sunset and the next morning.
Police are advising drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to be extra cautious, as the roads become more slippery.
