An all-party committee will determine if two northern most ridings — Kenora-Rainy River and Timmins-James Bay — should be divided to create one or two additional ones, that would be made up mostly of First Nations communities.

Kenora-Rainy River and Timmins-James Bay have only 161,000 residents but cover nearly 600,000 square kilometres between the Manitoba and Quebec borders and north to Hudson Bay.

The ridings include many fly-in First Nations communities and no year-round road access.

New Democrat Gilles Bisson, who represents Timmins-James Bay, has been pushing for years to increase the number of northern ridings to give First Nations a stronger voice in the legislature.

Attorney General Yasir Naqvi says any new riding would be dedicated to First Nations, and would create the opportunity for Ontario to elects its first indigenous M-P-P.

This would be in addition to 15 new seats being added to match federal riding boundaries in 2018.

Most will be in southern Ontario.
