The Academy says it’s received a ”personal letter” from the 75-year-old singer-songwriter saying he wishes he could receive the prize personally but that other commitments make it unfortunately impossible.
Dylan is required to give a Nobel lecture between now and June.
He’s not the first recipient not to have been awarded the prize in person.
Harold Pinter and Doris Lessing, winners in 2005 and 2007, were among others who did not attend the ceremony.
Dylan was awarded his prize for literature ”for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.”
