There are further indications that insulin may have been used in the alleged murders of eight elderly residents at two southwestern Ontario nursing homes.

A report says family members of some of the victims are saying police have told them insulin was used in the deaths of their loved ones.

Insulin is also the sole substance that a court order specifically prohibited Elizabeth Wettlaufer from possessing, shortly before the former nurse was charged with the murders of the eight residents earlier this week.

OPP investigators allege Wettlaufer gave drugs to seven residents at Caressant Care Woodstock and one resident at Meadow Park long term care home in London. They won’t say what drug was used, only that it was a drug that was available in the nursing homes.

Chemical pathologist Vincent Marks says a person with a weak heart could die of heart failure if given a high dose of insulin.

Wettlaufer is scheduled for a second court appearance next week.
