Paul Beatty has won the Man Booker Prize for fiction – for The Sellout Man.

Beatty becomes the first American novelist to win one of the most prestigious literary awards in the world.

Two Canadians were in the running for the prize – which comes with approximately C$80,000.

Vancouver born Montreal-based Madeleine Thein was a finalist – for her novel Do Not Say We Have Nothing – which earlier today won the Governor General’s Literary Award for fiction.

And Montreal-born author David Szalay was also nominated for All That Man Is.

The Man Booker Prize was founded in 1969 and was previously open only to writers from Britain, Ireland and the Commonwealth. It was expanded in 2014 to include all English-language authors.
