The first woman to become artistic director of the famous Globe Theatre in London is leaving – after its board decided her methods were not “authentic” enough.
Emma Rice will depart in April 2018 – after taking up the position in April of this year.
Rice received widespread praise for her innovative approach to the Globe space – especially in terms of sound and lighting – but it appears the Globe board hopes to return the theatre to the way it was before Rice joined – despite her success.
CEO Neil Constable praised her work but says the board has decided that programming should be structured around more traditional “shared light” productions – where the actors can see the audience – just like in Shakespeare’s day.
