Following a hugely successful cross-Canada tour, Gord Downie, the front-man for the Canadian band The Tragically Hip – has spoken publicly for the first time – about his declining health.

Downie has terminal brain cancer.

But he tells CBC that in some sense – he feels lucky about his terminal condition – and that it’s better than dying in a traffic accident – because he can now do some of the things he wanted to accomplish.

One of those projects is Secret Path, a new solo album – inspired by the tragedy of Canada’s residential school system.

Downie says “just doing things” brings him peace – and he admitted that his memory is fading because of the brain cancer – so he writes things down on his hands.

He also says The Tragically Hip are working on another recording – and he’s taking things one day at a time.
