Johnson was only with the New Orleans girl group for its first few years because she was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia.
Their first hit was one of the biggest ever.
”Chapel of Love,” knocked off The Beatles ”Love Me Do,” in 1964 to soar to the top of the Billboard Hot 100.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame included the song as one of the 500 songs to shape music.
The song also ranked 284 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
