The day parole of a man who pleaded guilty to taking part in a plot to bomb targets in Toronto and elsewhere in Ontario has been extended.

The Parole Board of Canada say Saad Gaya has made a ”strong beginning” to his period of conditional release.

He was initially granted six months of day parole, with special conditions, including to participate in counselling to deal with religious extremism.

The board’s since reviewed his case and decided to extend his day parole up until his statutory released date next January.

Gaya, now 28, was one of the so-called ‘Toronto 18’, a group of men and youths arrested in 2006 and accused of plotting to bomb targets including the Toronto Stock Exchange in protest over Canada’s military involvement in Afghanistan.

Eleven of them were convicted of terrorist offences.
