A week after would-be suicide bomber Aaron Driver was killed in Strathroy, Ontario, Canada’s Public Safety Minister says the Liberals are upping their game in the fight against terrorism.
Ralph Goodale has announced the imminent hiring of a deradicalization adviser. He says this individual could succeed in counter-terrorism challenges where police and intelligence services are falling short.
Goodale says the federal government is also considering making counter-radicalization counselling mandatory for people under anti-terrorism peace bonds.
“One suggestion is the greater use of local community outreach organizations that can intervene in the right way and do so in a methodical organized way which at present is not adequately provided for,” Goodale told reporters.
“There are all kinds of these programs all over the world. Everyone’s got one,” said Phil Gurski, a former analyst at the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, to the Globe and Mail. And yet, he added, no one has really figured out the best approach.
Federal authorities had red flagged Aaron Driver, but the 24 year old managed to put together an improvised bomb and a video in which he promised to shed Canadian blood for the ISIS terror group.
