It was a tip from the FBI early Wednesday that alerted them to what the RCMP calls the ”imminent threat” posed by Aaron Driver, who was killed later that day in a confrontation in Strathroy.
Deputy commissioner Mike Cabana says the tip included a video of the 24-year-old Driver, warning he planned to set off a homemade explosive device in an urban centre during morning or afternoon rush hour.
While the confrontation ended tragically, Cabana adds it could well have had a ”completely different ending” with a ”significantly larger loss of life.”

In the video, played during a news conference in Ottawa, a masked Driver stares at the camera as he rails against western ”enemies of Islam” and warns the only solution would be the ”spilling of your blood.”
The RCMP says Driver was shot after he left the house and got into a waiting taxi, where he apparently set off an improvised explosive in the back of the cab.
Meanwhile, his father says he’s not really surprised by what happened and does not blame police.
Wayne Driver says as a retired military member, he understands the rules of engagement.
He believes police gave his son every opportunity to surrender but that he chose not to.
He adds Aaron was a very happy child, whose whole world fell apart when the boy’s mother died and he remarried.
Driver says his son had become very secretive and full of hate and that he’s not really surprised by what happened.
