July was a hot month when it came to weather and the housing market but not jobs, especially Ontario.
The latest unemployment numbers sow Canada lost 71,000 full-time positions while part-time employment rose by 40,000, meaning the month was in the red by 31,000 jobs as the national rate rose slightly to 6.9%
Most of the job losses were in Ontario.
Those were offset by gains in B.C. and New Brunswick.
Ontario’s jobless rate remained unchanged at 6.4% while Toronto’s fell from 6.7 to 6.4%.
While some economists speculate the national decline was due in part to the census, conducted earlier this year, Statistics Canada disagrees.
